Tips for creating better first impressions
Today I will talk about how to make a good impression in a
first meeting with a stranger. The subject has been studied by different
universities around the world, who have reached interesting conclusions based
on this we can talk about how to behave to generate warmth in a first contact.
One of the most curious findings is the "chameleon
effect", demonstrated by researchers at New York University in 1999. This
effect occurs when we unwittingly imitate the behavior of the other person,
which facilitates liking between peers.
It has also been found that praising a third party has a
positive effect on the perception of our own personality. People associate the
adjectives used to describe others with our personality, even when they know
that these traits do not actually characterize us. Another important factor is
to show positive emotions, as people can experience a kind of emotional
contagion and replicate our personal mood. Even revealing personal flaws from
time to time can be beneficial, according to the study by Elliot Aronson of the
University of Texas. He tells us that small mistakes make us more human and
sympathetic in the eyes of others. It has also been shown that casual touches,
such as touching an arm or back when greeting, can generate warmth.
A French study showed that participants were twice as
successful at initiating a dialogue when they lightly brushed the other
person's arms while talking. Self-disclosure is also an effective technique for
building relationships. Participants in a study from different U.S.
universities felt much closer after answering personal questions for 45 minutes
compared to those who had light chats about parties and hobbies. Finally,
talking about yourself can be as rewarding as food, money and sex, according to
the Harvard researchers. By giving each other space to share their opinions and
personal experiences, we strengthen the bond. In summary, unwillingly imitating
the other's behavior, praising a third party, showing positive emotions,
revealing personal flaws from time to time, having casual contact, telling a
secret and talking about themselves are some of the actions that can generate
warmth in a first encounter with a stranger. We hope these tips will be useful
in your next social interaction!
